While at Towson, she worked summers at the Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents (RICA) in Rockville, MD where she began learning skills in working with youth with a variety of mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, and ADHD. During her time at the University of Maryland, Saskia had two internships; the first was at University of Maryland Medical Center working with adults with substance abuse and mental health disorders on an outpatient basis and the second was working at Potomac Ridge Behavioral Health, an inpatient mental health hospital. There Saskia gained experience working with both adolescents and adults with various degrees of mental health concerns from mood disorders to personality disorders. Saskia also earned experience with group therapy.
In 2002, Saskia began a 17-year career with Montgomery County Child Welfare Services. She increased her expertise in the assessment and treatment of children, adolescents, and adults with everything from minor life stressors to serious substance abuse and mental health diagnoses. During her career she has learned to build strong relationships even with the most resistant clients which has helped them begin the healing process. In addition, her experience as a social worker has also given her knowledge of appropriate resources and referrals for individuals and families in need.
Saskia uses an eclectic style of counseling to fit each client based on their needs and personality, utilizing CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) art therapy, and person-centered therapy to include a few. Her sense of humor and friendly accepting personality helps clients feel safe to share the most sensitive parts of their lives. While she likes to keep things light and relaxed she is also skilled at handling difficult topics. Because of her diverse background and personal/professional experiences, she is able to relate to a wide range of individuals from young adolescents to adults. Working with Saskia is like talking to a trusted friend who is able to guide you through difficult times.
